I am proud to announce that Run With Paula Events will be starting a new and exciting chapter in 2014. After 13 amazing years of creating and producing these popular events, I've turned over operations to another well-established local event company. Hippie Chick, Helvetia, Crawfish Crawl, Pints to Pasta, and the Turkey Trot will be part of the Better Series, a race company created by the management team of the Hood To Coast / Portland To Coast Relays!
Thanks to my loyal friends and participants for years of strong support. Together, we grew these events into the Best of the Best in the northwest. Without your enthusiastic efforts in participation and volunteerism, these events would not have reached the level of success that we have come to expect. Run With Paula and the Better Series are a perfect match of creative people that embody the spirit of the local running and walking community.
Finally, Run With Paula is still alive and well…look for me to create new Run With Paula events in the future! As for now I hope to see you at the Turkey Trot - my last event of 2013! You know you can always find us at Portland Running Company and we hope to see you there!

UP NEXT: The 2013 West Linn Turkey Trot
Family Fun Race Course, outside fun for everyone! The Turkey Trot will meander through the beautiful tree lined trails inside of Mary S. Young Park in West Linn, Oregon. The course will be well marked and well supported and approximately 3-4 miles long. The Kids Trot will run on the bark chip trail for an out and back trail course and will be 1K in distance. The Kids Trot is for kids 7 years and younger. Be sure and wear your trail shoes and clothes that can get muddy and dirty. Both runners and walkers are welcome - all abilites.

Blog Post :: I Left My Heart In San Francisco
Do you ever ask yourself why you run? I pose this question because of the experience I had this weekend at the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco. I have been coaching a great woman by the name of Sarah Bowen Shea, freelance writer, in hopes of helping her meet her sub 4-hour marathon goal. Sarah was relentless in her training, doing everything I prescribed. Sarah kept a blog on Runnersworld.com for 6 months preparing for this marathon. I felt so happy to be a part of this experience and hoped that I could get her off on the right foot on race day morning. It was race day morning and I left the Sir Francis Drake with my girlfriends Karen and Kelli to go meet Sarah and her team of Runner’s World photographers.

Each year, more than 300 women and children access shelter, food, clothing, transportation, support groups and individual support at our Hedco Emergency Shelter and over 3500 people are served by our in-house crisis line.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS): What you should know
NSAIDS are medications containing ibuprofen, naproxen, and ketoprofen. These are contained in popular products such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve, and Orudis. Aspirin is also an NSAID and is found in Bayer and Excedrin. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is not an NSAID.
NSAIDS are used to reduce pain and swelling at the site of an injury. They do not actually promote tissue healing and can even slow joint (cartilage) and bone healing.
NSAIDS have many side effects including stomach pain, bleeding and ulcers. They also interfere with the body’s ability to stop bleeding.
Significant bleeding in the gut can occur when taking NSAIDS without any warning. People that regularly consume alcohol and those that take more than the recommended dose of NSAIDS and/or long-term use of NSAIDS are at high risk for developing stomach problems.
Despite their availability as an over the counter drug, athletes need to be careful when taking them. NSAIDS should not be taken for more than 10 days because of their side effects. One should avoid drinking alcohol while taking NSAIDS as well. And most importantly for runners, NSAIDS prevent the body from repairing cartilage. If you have pain or swelling that lasts more than a week or two, you and your doctor should explore what is causing the problem, and alternative ways to deal reduce the pain and inflammation.
